Pillar 4 · Travel & arrival

Moving to the US on a K1 visa

The visa is in your hands, and suddenly the real questions start: what do I pack, when do I marry, can I work? Here is the plan I wish I had made earlier.

The visa is in your hands, and suddenly the real questions start: what do I pack, when do I marry, can I work? Here is the plan I wish I had made earlier.

The 90-day rule, without the panic

Once you land, you have 90 days to get married. That sounds short, but it is usually plenty — most couples marry in the first weeks. The important thing is not to miss the deadline, because overstaying it is serious.

Use the 90 days as a window, not a countdown. Marriage first, then the paperwork to stay and to work.

  • Marry within 90 days of arrival — do not miss the deadline.
  • File to adjust your status right after the wedding.
  • Apply for work permission and a travel document at the same time.
My experience

My last month before leaving, I could barely think straight — too many moving pieces at once. The list I used to stay sane was one simple page. That is the habit I kept for everything after.

Can I work? Can I travel?

Not right away, for both. You cannot work until your work permission is approved, which takes months. And once you file to stay, you should not leave the US until your travel document is approved — leaving early can complicate your case.

Plan your first months without a salary, and postpone any trip home until you have the right document in hand.

The first weeks in the US

Beyond the legal steps, give yourself room to land emotionally. Opening a bank account, getting a local phone number, learning how healthcare works — none of it is hard, but it all takes energy when everything is new.

One piece of advice I give everyone: do the administrative boring stuff first, while you have momentum. The fun of a new city is better enjoyed with a clear head.

FAQ

What happens after I get married?

You file to adjust your status to permanent resident — that is the step toward the green card. Do it promptly after the wedding and keep copies of everything.

Can I leave the US and come back while my case is pending?

Not without the travel document, which you apply for with your adjustment. Leaving before it is approved can be seen as abandoning your case. Wait for the document.
