The K1 visa interview: questions and tips

I was terrified before mine. It lasted about fifteen minutes. Here is what they actually asked, and how to prepare without losing sleep.

How it feels, honestly

The interview is short and, in most cases, uneventful. An officer asks about your relationship, checks your documents, and that is mostly it. The fear is almost always bigger than the event itself.

The goal of the officer is simple: confirm that the relationship is real and that you are eligible. You are not on trial — you are answering questions about your own life.

  • ✓Your passport, appointment confirmation, and visa application confirmation.
  • ✓Original civil documents: birth certificate, and divorce or death certificates if any.
  • ✓Proof of relationship: photos, messages, call logs, travel records.
  • ✓The financial documents from the US side.
  • ✓Medical exam results (usually sent directly, but bring any copy you were given).
  • ○A calm mind and honest answers — you know your story better than anyone.

FAQ

What questions do they ask at the K1 interview?

The classics: how you met, when you last saw each other, what your plans are, where you will live. Answer honestly and simply. They are not trick questions.

What should I bring to the interview?

Your passport, the confirmation pages, original civil documents, proof of relationship, and the financial documents. Bring originals — copies are not enough.

What if my English is not perfect?

Do not worry. Officers deal with non-native speakers all day. Speak slowly, answer what is asked, and it is fine to say you do not understand a question.
